Planning for Pregnancy: 10 Tips to a Healthy Start
Chances are, if you find yourself reading this article, you may be very close to beginning trying to conceive or planning out a pregnancy. There are many women who unfortunately aren’t able to plan their pregnancy and become pregnant ‘accidentally’, and aren’t able to take steps to ensure their health before finding out about their pregnancy. This guide will offer those of you preparing ahead of time some insight on things you can do to provide your baby with the best start possible.
Tip no. 1: Health Check
Starting about three months before you plan trying to conceive, you should begin preparations for pregnancy. Setting an appointment with your physician for a routine check-up and also a gynecological exam will ensure you are in optimal health to carry a pregnancy successfully and healthfully. This is also a good time to ask any questions that may be on your mind.
Tip no. 2: Changing or Stopping Medication
Certain medications are safe to take while pregnant, however, some may not be. Ask your doctor while at your appointment(s) about any medications you are currently taking, and whether or not they will be safe to take during pregnancy. If they are not, your doctor will advise you on the next best step, or maybe even stop your medications altogether.
Tip no. 3: Dental Exams are Important
It may sound absurd, but a trip to the dentist can ensure bacteria in your mouth haven’t caused any unforeseen problems or infections, thus allowing the dentist to put you on a treatment plan. Also, any work that needs to be done can be taken care of ahead of the pregnancy and ensuring medical issues which could have been avoided do not arise.
Tip no. 4: Take a Chill Pill
If you are stressed, this can impede your ability to get pregnant without hesitation. Finding ways to eliminate undue stress and aggravation can ensure you are mentally ready and able to take on something like becoming pregnant. De-stressing can be something as simple as a bubble bath, or taking a walk. Sometimes, things in life that need to come to light and be eliminated cause a lot of stress as well. Think about the current circumstances in your life, and decide if there is anything you can do to stress less.
Tip no. 5: Get Physically Fit
Getting adequate exercise can, in itself, also offer de-stressing properties. It can also get your body into prime condition and enable you to get pregnant and carry a healthy baby to full term.
Tip no. 6: Eat Well
Beginning a healthy diet isn’t always easy, but it is something you can grow accustomed to, especially if you know you are preparing yourself to carry a baby. Incorporating folic acid containing foods into your daily diet is imperative. Eat more fresh fruits and vegetables, preferably raw, to absorb as much vitamin as you can from each. You should also cut back on fatty foods, processed foods, and anything containing trans-fats. You can still indulge in something sweet here and there, just be sure not to overdo it.
Tip no. 7: Break some Habits
Anything you do to your body that can cause adverse effects such as consumed drugs, alcohol, or cigarettes need to go. You want your body to become a safe and healthy haven, not a wasteland. Prepare your body for life, and improve the quality of your own life in the process.
Tip no. 8: Weight Check
Ensuring you are a healthy weight before and during pregnancy will ensure a healthy pregnancy throughout. Being overweight or underweight can inhibit your ability to conceive, thus causing added frustration. Be sure to get on an exercise regimen for at least 30 minutes every day to lose excess weight and maintain a healthy weight.
Tip no. 9: Talk It Out
Having a discussion pre-pregnancy with your partner will ensure a smooth transaction in the pregnancy department. Make sure you are both on the same page emotionally before diving into this endeavor.
Tip no. 10: Do Something for You
Once children enter the picture, it makes it hard to accomplish lifelong dreams of vacations or ambitions. Be sure to do something you have always wanted to do before taking this step. Plan a vacation with your significant other or maybe even just take a day at the spa for yourself. Whatever it is, make sure it’s something worthwhile and something you will remember.
