Born on August 4th, 1961, he only met his father once in his life before his untimely death in 1982 due to a road accident. He was mostly raised by his mother Ann Dunham and his grandparents. Born in 1974, Leonardo Dicaprio is an actor and environmentalist. His parents divorced when he was 1year old and was since raised by his mother. Leonardo is famous for movies such as The Titanic of 1997, Blood Diamonds of 2006 and Romeo and Juliet of 1996. He started his acting career as a child but his success came in the 90s after featuring in a family comedy, Growing Pains. In 1993, he co-starred in the film, What’s Eating Gilbert Grape. His outstanding performance got him his first Oscar nomination as best supporting actor. It was not until 2015 that he won his first Oscar award for Best Actor in the movie, The Revenant. Leonardo Dicaprio continues to call for support to indigenous communities and protection of natural environments.

Kanye was raised by his mother Donda West after his parents amicably divorced when he was 3 years. His music career while in college and he dropped out of American Academy of Art in Chicago to pursue his music career. This certainly paid off with 6 out of his 7 solo Albums debuting at number 1. He has sold 34million albums and won 21 Grammy Awards. He has also been listed in Time Magazine’s top 100 influential people twice. Olympics is a global event held every 4 years bringing competitors from all countries in different sporting activities. If you are an Olympics fan,then the name Michael Phelps definitely rings a bell. He is the most celebrated Olympic swimmer having won 28 medals in 5 Olympic Games. Michael was raised by his mother and sisters. His sisters were more interested in swimming than he was but at the age of 7 his interest in swimming began. At 15years, he broke the world record in 200M men’s butterfly to become the youngest record holder. His career took off from then and he has since won 39 medals, 28 from individual events and 11 in group events.
- Shaquille O’Neal
Born in 1972, Shaquille O’Neal never knew his birth father and was raised by his mother. Shaquille is famous for his trilling and decorative NBA career. He retired in 2011 but still remains an icon in NBA sports with young professionals looking to be like him. Since his retirement, he became an on-screen NBA analyst. Besides basketball, Shaquille spent time on music and acting and released a couple of albums during the 90s. He also boasts of a doctorate degree from Barry University in Florida.
Children raised by single mothers have equal opportunities in life to become whom they want to be. Being raised by a single parent does not define a child’s limits but provides an opportunity for them to outdo themselves. Through proper guidance, they are able to grow up and succeed in their endeavors.
